What do we do every Sunday evening?
We usually begin with the Evening Bell Chant and then together chant the Heart Sutra (in English) and the Great Dharani.
We then sit silently for about 25 minutes followed by the reciting of the four great vows .
After an opportunity for some questions, comments, and observations about practice, we end with some announcements and are usually done by 8pm.
How much experience do I need to join this group?
You are welcome to join us no matter what your prior experience with meditation or Buddhism. The practice of sitting silently is rather universal and no particular faith commitment is required.
What if I have questions?
No problem. We are glad to answer questions about the practice – and we can usually recommend some reading as well, if you are interested. At the same time, Keeping a Question is also a useful practice tool.
Is this a Zen Center?
It should be noted that we are not a residential center with classes, but are a local group of Zen practitioners who practice on their own and then regularly meet to practice silent meditation together.
We regularly meet on Sunday evenings and usually offer a half-day retreat for longer meditation practice once a month.
We are also part of the Gateless Gate Zen Center in Gainesville which is a residential center, if you are interested in moving to a zen center or wish to pursue longer practice periods.
